Further Update on Devastation in Dominica caused by Tropical Storm Erika 2015

    • 9-8-2015

This is an update on situation in Dominica as a result of the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Erika. The storm triggered mudslides and flooding that destroyed roads, bridges and homes. It is estimated that between 10,000 and 20,000 people have been affected while half of the island is still without electricity.

Approximately 25 persons died while the search is on for approximately 30 persons who are missing. In one community alone, 109 residents had to be evacuated. Nine local areas have now been declared disaster zones by Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit.

I have received words from the Baptist Federation of Guadeloupe and the Baptist Association of Grenada that plans are being made to deliver some basic items to the Baptist Union of Dominica for distribution. Both Baptist groups are to be commended. As Baptists in the Caribbean, let us stand in solidarity with the people of Dominica by:

    1. Declaring Sunday, September 6 as a day of prayer for Dominica and

    2. Receiving a special offering on Sunday, September 6 to be sent to Dominica via the Caribbean Baptist Fellowship.

The CBF continues to monitor the situation with the assistance of Vice President Bernadette Richards - Duncan from St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Rev. David Serrant, President of the Baptist Union of Dominica
